Hi there. I know this is so random, but do you know how to get in touch with John Corry? It simply must be the same John I met years ago, when I worked in Yosemite for a brief end-of-summer stint after college. If you hear from him or speak to him, please tell him I said hello? Cheers, and apologies again for the weirdness of this comment. :o) I'm on the web, here: http://gplus.to/becbec

This is an important message for those on the network.

The Lunatics of Casa De Luna, Pacific Crest Trail mile 478 have honored me with the quest to find Pete and Simon. The Mailmen came by the Casa in '09 delivering important medication to hikers who fell ill with insanity. They kindly and in an Iditarodesque fashion delivered the vital medication then took more correspondence from all souls present and relayed them through the network, to the prospective recipients.

The Casa seeks Pete and Simons skill and style yet again.

Hi!
I just found your blog, and as a native Bolivian (specifically from Cochabamba, but with strong ties to Potosi and La Paz), I have to say, I'm SO impressed with your posts from your trip in 2008. I know I'm 2 years late finding your blog, but the accuracy and warmth with which you describe your experiences while you were there, is simply delightful!

I've been actually living in the States (Philly, PA) for the last 9 years (married to my soulmate who is a native from just outside of Philly...anyway, that's another story), but I go back to Bolivia at least once a year, since my whole family still lives in Cocha. My grandfather was a proud "Potosino", but since he passed away not too long ago, the fam sort of stopped feeling like they had a reason to visit Potosi.

Regardless, this is just a quick "thank you" for sharing such a lovely journey with the world! If you allow me, I'd like to share your blog with my american-family and friends. When the cultures are so vastly different (at least in appearance), it can be difficult to explain...so your blog will do that for me.

Anyway. Thanks again!

In Guatemala we interacted with locals a lot. We all spent a ton of time in the orphanage, as well as interacting with people in the market, in the Spanish schools, on the camiones and in the hostel where the organization is located.

Most all of the clients are westerners, but they are not all English speaking. Sometimes Spanish is your common language. Sometimes we would bring kids from the orphanage along on the trips as a treat, which was really rewarding.

The guides are not just from the US. When I was there we had a Brit, a kiwi, a Spaniard, an Israeli and a couple of Germans and Estadounidenses. While we all spoke English, some guides preferred that we interact in Spanish.

You will use your Spanish a ton and if it isn't very good it'll either improve or you may be miserable and useless. Volunteering with QT is not like other structured westerner-oriented volunteer experience. It's totally volunteer run so it's always different based on the staff's interpersonal dynamics and sometimes it can be kind of chaotic. Like a lot of work in Latin America, you really need to be a self-starter and willing to do your share.

Like any experience, it is what you make it, and it can be absolutely awesome. I hope that helps.

Hey Ally, I am looking into volunteering for Quetzaltrekkers, and I was going to see if you could answer a couple questions of mine...

Do volunteers get to interact a lot with the Nicaraguans or Guatemalans?
How much Spanish are volunteers exposed to?
Also, are the tours mainly for Americans, English, etc? or are there Latinos that go on the hikes?

Thanks,
Tonya

Hey Ally!
Im glad to hear you finished. I met you, Reddy, and Rafiki this summer on the trail the day you guys were headed for Mammoth. My group and I were the heavily laiden JMTers headed south, two redheads a guy and a girl, and myself the third had a cool Keva china guy sunhat on. We talked with you three for quite a while. I was eating jelly beans today and I thought of you. I often wondered how you madeout until I remembered you blogged. I plan to do the PCT in 2012. I often tell your story to friends about how you aquired your trail food. -the crafty thru hiking goddess story. Thanks for the great advice and for posting all of your adventures!!!
may our trails meet again,

Hey, you made it! Great!!! I finally figured out your web site after I misplaced and than washed your address... We are glad you made it safe and sound. My daughter Cheyenne and I are the ones who gave you and your friend a short lift from Rocky point to the closed ski resort hwy 140 West (Oregon). My daughter moved to San Diego with her husband and is doing well. I will have to forward your info. so she can look at the photos and read your notes. AWESOME photo's.... Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and may God bless your journeys in life. Rebecca

I know how you feel in this post. I got (and still get) similar reactions from people when they hear I rode my bike across the country. You just have to point yourself in the right direction and keep pedaling, and eventually you'll get there. And it's entirely rewarding; just look at all those beautiful photos. And they probably don't even do the real sights justice, when you're immersed in that scenery and it's your reality for months on end.

I've tried to tell other people that I sometimes think of my trip as a metaphor for life (similar to you), and got laughed at. Oh well.

Also, walking that trail is more bad ass than biking that across the US. I'm sure I've told you before, but congrats on finishing an awesome trek. :)
